Abstract
Using the descriptive method, this study focused on analyzing the vulgarity in the lyrics of rap songs; specifically, it classified the vulgar language in the lyrics of the selected rap songs into three terms: violent/violence, obscene name-calling, and foul words. Samples were taken from five of the several top most popular Billboard raps genre on March 8,2014: Timber by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha, Show Me by Kid Ink Featuring Chris Brown, The Monster by Eminem featuring Rihanna, My Hitta by YG Featuring Jeezy & Rich Homie Quan and 23 by Mike WiLL Made-It Featuring Miley Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa & Juicy J. Words and obscene expressions were defined technically using authorized dictionaries and online dictionaries. Content analysis was used to analyze the lyrics descriptive and interpretative meanings as rap songs are considered as form of communication. Results of the study revealed the dominant usage of vulgar language in three categories: violent/violence, obscene name-calling, and foul words and expressions.
