Assessment of the disaster preparedness of UP Visayas Library at Miagao and Iloilo City campuses: A basis for the development of a disaster risk reduction program

Abstract

Disaster preparedness is one aspect of the library that is commonly neglected. This study looked into the disaster preparedness of the libraries of UP Visayas Miagao and Iloilo campuses. The self-formulated checklist, gathered from the Manitoba paradigm, was used for gathering data, serving both as interview guide and for ocular inspection. Basic building characteristics and requirements of both campus libraries met standards of permanency and materials used. However, with age and earthquake experiences there is an urgent need for example for plastering of cracks on concrete walls and provide fire-retardation of wooden walls among others. There was an apparent lack of sufficient safety features as fire extinguishers among others. There was no record of remedial measures or enhancement by the school administration. The personnel still lacked critical disaster emergency skills added to regular realistic drills as CPRs. Other support components should include fire truck, ambulance, and even municipality fire assistance. With the awareness of the above, therefore, a proposed disaster risk reduction program is being submitted for considerations.
