Abstract
Distribution system losses have been and are still one of the most important issues in electric utility operations. Much on theory has been said, however, little on practical and experiential aspects have been written about them. This paper presents current problems faced by the Private Utility Company in the Philippines particularly Panay Electric Company, Inc. (PECO), in her electricity metering system and instrumentation of the power distribution system.
Over the past years the electricity system experienced excessively high losses because of its inefficient electrical equipment. Investigations revealed a number of factors contributing to both technical and non-technical losses. While most of the non-technical losses have been reduced, it is not certain that such losses have been reduced to a minimum. The purpose of this paper is to highlight current problems contributing to high losses within the electrical distribution system in PECO, as well as economic justification for the programmes employed.
The paper describes briefly the programmes adopted by PECO to reduce system losses with emphasis on results obtained, experiences encountered and expenditures involved.
