dc.description.abstractThe study was conducted to determine the reading habits, word recognition and comprehension skills of Grade Six pupils of Dumalag Central School, Dumalag, Capiz. The descriptive study used lot sampling in selecting 79 respondents from the total population, Classroom Reading Inventory by Nicolas Slvaroli was administered to identify the pupils’ reading levels, word recognition and comprehension skills. On the other hand, teacher made questionnaire was used to gather data on pupils’ reading habits, home location, fathers, occupation and fathers’ educational attainment. The said questionnaire was presented to the members of the thesis panel for validation. The gathered data was processed and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) for windows. Frequency counts mean, standard deviation, was descriptive statistic employed. Analysis of variance or ANOVA to test differences at .05 level of significance and the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient were employed to test the significance differences and relationships between variables. Results indicated that respondents were poor readers for most of the pupils have reading levels lower than their present grade where they are enrolled. In like manner, the pupils have difficulties in recognizing words and have poor comprehension skills. Majority of the subjects of the study has poor reading habits. The findings revealed that significant differences were observed in pupils’ word recognition skills and comprehension skills and reading habits when pupils were grouped by sex, home location, respondents” fathers’ occupation and educational attainment. Furthermore, it was found out that reading habits, word recognition and comprehension skills were significantly related to each other.en_US
