Development of instructional video in teaching taekwondo as a self-defense

Abstract

This study aimed to develop an instructional video for teaching Taekwondo as a practical self-defense method, grounded in the lived experiences of individuals who have faced various forms of harassment. Using a qualitative developmental research design with an Input-Process-Output framework, key informant interviews were conducted with three participants who shared firsthand accounts of street harassment, workplace harassment, and physical sexual harassment. Thematic analysis of these interviews revealed the emotional challenges victims face, ranging from fear and frustration to trauma, and highlighted their coping strategies, including vigilance, seeking social support, and physical self-defense. Participants emphasized the importance of learning practical and situational self-defense techniques, such as escaping grabs, blocking strikes, and using improvised weapons. They also expressed preferences for accessible, clear, and realistic instructional formats, with some favoring video-based learning while others preferred in-person training. Drawing on expert validation and participant feedback, the researchers developed a Taekwondo-based instructional video featuring step-by-step demonstrations, slow-motion replays, and real-life scenarios to enhance personal safety and confidence. The study underscores the role of self-defense education in empowering individuals against harassment and recommends integrating such resources into schools and communities to foster safer environments. This research contributes to martial arts education by combining traditional Taekwondo techniques with modern multimedia tools to address contemporary safety needs.
