Knowledge and attitude towards dietary supplement utilization among middle-aged adults in a selected Barangay in Iloilo
摘要
This study aimed to determine knowledge and attitude towards dietary supplement utilization among middle-aged adults in a selected barangay in Iloilo. It utilized a descriptive-correlational design and a census approach, involving all middle-aged adults (40–60 years old) in a selected barangay. Data were obtained from 174 respondents using a 33-item researcher-made questionnaire that underwent content validation. Descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, summarized respondent characteristics, while inferential statistics, such as Spearman’s rho and Cramér’s V, analyzed relationships between variables. Findings revealed that most respondents understood dietary supplements but had misconceptions, such as overestimating Vitamin C’s role in illness prevention. Attitudes were positive, viewing supplements as additions, not replacements. Vitamins were the most commonly used supplements, though many consumed them without consulting healthcare providers. A very strong relationship was found between higher knowledge and frequent supplement use (Spearman’s rho = .762, p = .000), and a strong association between positive attitudes and regular use (Cramér’s V = .406, p = .000). Hence, knowledge and attitude significantly influence dietary supplement utilization.
