요약
Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection, is highly prevalent in tropical regions like the Philippines. In 2023, there were over 80,000 dengue cases nationwide by mid-July, with a significant increase in Iloilo City. A specific barangay, identified as a dengue hotspot due to its proximity to the Iloilo River and a landfill, was particularly susceptible to mosquito breeding. This study explored the lived experiences of the barangay officials in a certain barangay and the community-based interventions implemented to manage the outbreak. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the research identified four key themes: Coping strategies on dengue outbreak, Perceptions, practices, and health beliefs regarding dengue outbreak, Community involvement, Participation, and Implementation Frequency on Dengue Outbreak and Knowledge, awareness and outcome perceptions regarding dengue outbreak. Factors affecting dengue outbreaks were predominantly environmental, such as stagnant water during the rainy season, improper waste management, and proximity to breeding grounds. The study revealed that barangay officials had a solid understanding of dengue prevention and identified consistent cleaning of surroundings, health education, and timely medical intervention as the most effective perceived interventions. Participants emphasized proactive measures such as regular cleanups, misting, fogging, and health education. Strong leadership from barangay officials, in collaboration with health centers and the city health office, was crucial in mobilizing community efforts for dengue prevention. These findings highlighted the critical role of community involvement, leadership, and public health education in combating dengue in vulnerable areas.
