Abstract
Student nurses are expected to understand the significance of nutrition and how it can help improve their academic performance, maintain healthy eating habits, and avoid unhealthy eating behaviors leading to eating disorders and diseases. This study aimed to determine whether there is a significant relationship between nutrition knowledge, eating habits, and academic performance among student nurses in a private university in Iloilo City, Philippines. Study participants were randomly selected student nurses (n=272) enrolled during AY 2022-2023. Data were gathered using a survey questionnaire with a four-point Likert scale. The respondents were given one week to answer and return the questionnaires. Then, the researchers coded and encoded all the data gathered. Most respondents recognized Vitamin B6's importance (95.6%), identified processed foods as potential weight gain causes (93.4%), and understood calorie intake risks (93%). In terms of eating habits, 45.2% consumed vegetables, 29.8% ate fresh fruits regularly, and 23.2% had daily breakfast. Conversely, 30.9% consumed fast food, 5.9% chose soda, and 3.3% skipped meals. Academically, students varied, with 29% achieving a general average between 1.2 and 1.65, and 36.4% ranging from 1.86 to 2.5. However, there is no significant relationship between nutrition knowledge, eating habits, and academic performance (p=.428). Nearly half (44.1%) had low nutrition knowledge, indicating a need for targeted interventions. 33.1% showed poor eating habits, emphasizing a need for dietary improvement. Academic abilities varied, with no significant relationship between nutrition knowledge, eating habits, and academic performance. This highlights the importance of considering study habits and personal circumstances for academic success.
