Environmental awareness and practices of Grade 12 - Senior High School students of a private school in Iloilo City

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the level of environmental awareness and practices of Grade 12 Senior High School students of a private school in Iloilo City. The one shot survey design was used to gather data from 263 out of 838 Grade 12 SHS students using a researcher made survey instrument. All the data collected were coded and electronically processed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17. Descriptive data analyses like frequency, percentage and mean distribution were used in the study. Results revealed that the respondents of the study were generally female, 18 years of age, reside in urban areas, no environmental course related, mother and father were in college level, mothers were housewives, fathers were professionals, have an access to the internet, sometimes read environmental related items, sometimes watch environmental programs and sometimes surf environmental items in the internet. They generally have high level of environmental awareness and high environmental practices. No significant differences in environmental awareness were found according to the characteristics of the respondents. The environmental practices of the students differ according to their environmental courses, reading and surfing related environmental items. The respondents' level of environmental awareness is not related to their environmental practices.
