Abstract
This descriptive relational study was conducted to determine the level of Knowledge and adherence to the principles of aseptic technique and the relationship between variables among operating room nurses in selected tertiary hospitals in Iloilo City. Specifically, it sought to determine the OR nurses’ personal characteristics in terms of age, sex, professional qualification, job position, and length of experience in the operating room, attendance to trainings/seminars related to or and type of hospital they work in. It further aimed to determine if there is a relationship between personal characteristics of the respondents and their knowledge and adherence to the principles of aseptic technique; between level of knowledge and adherence to the principles of aseptic technique.

The study involved 123 OR nurses from selected tertiary hospitals in Iloilo City. This quantitative research utilized a survey design and a self-administered questionnaire for data collection. Data were analyzed with the use of descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed that most of the respondents were in the younger category, 30 years or younger, male, attained Bachelor’s degree holds a position a full time staff nurse, and have five years and less experience in the operating room complex, had attended at least 1 to 2 seminars/training and most of them were employed in a public tertiary hospital.

Knowledge on the principles of aseptic technique among OR nurses was average and their adherence to the principles of aseptic technique was good. Further, the study found that age, sex, professional qualification, job position, length of experience, attendance in seminar and type of hospital were nurse respondents were employed are not likely to influence knowledge. Only professional qualification was found to have a relationship with adherence but not age, sex, job position, length of experience, attendance in seminar and type of hospital. The OR nurses knowledge on principles of aseptic technique has no bearing on their adherence.
