Socio-demographic profile and the issues and concerns of the LGBTQI community in the Municipality of Estancia, Iloilo

Abstract

This paper determined the issues and concerns of LGBTQI community in the Municipality of Estancia, Iloilo. This is a descriptive correlation research study. The issues and concerns of LGBTQI were categorized into seven; education, health, family affairs, religion, politics, employment and partner relationship. Data were collected from 100 respondents using complete enumeration and an interview schedule. SPSS was used in data processing and analysis using frequency and mean for the descriptive analysis and Chi-square test for the inferential analysis. Results revealed that the LGBTQI’s in the Municipality of Estancia were predominantly young gays, living in non-coastal barangays with their parents, Roman Catholics, and given their relatively low level of educational attainment ended up working as laborers at a relatively low monthly income of not more than PHP 5,000. They had moderate extent of issues and concerns on education, health, family affairs, religion, media, political, employment, and partner relationship with health as their major issue and concern. Their extent of education, family affairs, political, and employment issues and concern were not significantly related to their age, barangay, religion, gender, educational attainment, occupation, monthly income and living arrangement. There was significant relationship between their extent of health issues and concern and barangay residence; extent of religious issues and concern and gender; extent of media issues and concern and age; extent of partner relationship issues and concern and gender; and major issue and concern and occupation.
