The roles of husbands and wives in household decision-making
(Philippine Sociological Society, 1994-01)
Some consider the Filipino family as patriarchal and authoritarian since the father is usually looked up to as the authority in the home. The father’s being “the principal breadwinner and nominal head of the family” is a ...
A phenomenological study of the lived experiences of clan war survivors in Central Panay
(2021-07)
In remote villages in Central Panay (Philippines), the presence of government institutions is not yet institutionalized and some traditional practices are still dominant in their way of life. Vengeance is still viewed ...
Servant leadership at West Negros University: Implications for Filipino higher education administration
(Central Philippine University, 2018-12)
Using Hale and Fields' (2007) instrument, this study includes the investigation of three factors relating to servant leadership: service, humility, and shared vision; and their relationships to outcome variables, including ...
Cultural competency of Ni-Vanuatu librarians: Vanuatu libraries contribution to the nation’s vibrant cultural identity
(Taylor and Francis, 2021-10-25)
Libraries play an important role in promoting cultural and language diversity, preserving knowledge and supporting educational goals. This paper discusses the ni-Vanuatu Librarians cultural competencies and examines the current programs and prospective initiatives that can contribute to a vibrant cultural identity of the nation. To have a baseline data, the inquiry started with a survey based on the American Library Association Diversity Standards: Cultural Competency for Academic Libraries. This standard was found appropriate as similar concepts are useful in Vanuatu, although some modification for context was required. Overall, the respondents are aware of their competence but recognise that cultural competence has not been integrated into work. Limitations, such as lack of funding, lack of resources making cultural competence not priority were reasons why they have not developed or applied these concepts. The results of this study provides insights on the applicability of this standard for libraries in the Pacific to develop the cultural competence of their staff....

Settling dispute is of utmost importance in the maintenance of social order. Regardless of the forms of governments, its nature of existence is universal throughout history and that it exists to regulate conflict. Different ...
Synthesis of polyaspartic acid-capped 2-aminoethylamino acid as a green water treatment agent and study of its inhibition performance and mechanism for calcium scales
(Royal Society of Chemistry, 2022-08-30)
Polyaspartic acid (PASP), a well-known green scale inhibitor for industrial water treatment, might be decomposed with prolonged duration, and its anti-scaling performance against CaCO<small>3</small> and CaSO<small>4</small> is diminished at a low concentration (<10 mg L<small>−1</small>) and a high temperature. With semi-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) tetrasodium salt as the mimicking model, novel phosphorus-free PASP-capped 2-aminoethylamino acid (PASP–ED<small>2</small>A) containing side chains bearing multi-functional groups is rationally designed and successfully prepared via the ring-opening reaction of cheap poly(succinimide) under mild reaction conditions with the assistance of readily available 2-aminoethyl amino acid. The static scale inhibition method is used to evaluate the scale inhibition performance of the as-synthesized PASP derivative. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are utilized to monitor the crystallization process of calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate scales, and density functional theory calculations are conducted to shed light on the relationship between the molecular structure and scale inhibition mechanism of PASP–ED<small>2</small>A. Results show that the as-prepared PASP–ED<small>2</small>A shows better scale inhibition performance for CaCO<small>3</small> and CaSO<small>4</small> than PASP with a low concentration, a high temperature, and an extended duration. Particularly, PASP–ED<small>2</small>A with a concentration of 10 mg L<small>−1</small> exhibits the best scale inhibition performance for CaCO<small>3</small>; its scale inhibition capacity is about two times as much as that of PASP. The reason lies in that the coordination atoms in the molecular structure of PASP–ED<small>2</small>A can chelate with Ca<small>2+</small> to inhibit the combination of Ca<small>2+</small> with anions and prevent the generation of CaCO<small>3</small> and CaSO<small>4</small> scales. The PASP–ED<small>2</small>A derivative can more efficiently retard the formation and growth of CaCO<small>3</small> and CaSO<small>4</small> crystal nuclei and exerts better inhibition performance against CaCO<small>3</small> and CaSO<small>4</small> scales than PASP....
