Abstract
Moving to a different country is often difficult for most international students. The process of trying to adapt to the new environment in an entirely different place may be quite difficult for new students as they may face many challenges that can lead to adverse effects on their mental health. This study identified how sociocultural adaptation impacts mental well-being among foreign students enrolled in one of the private universities in Iloilo City. This study sought to establish the relationship between adjustment to culture and changes in mental health. Data were collected from 57 respondents through validated instruments, including the Sociocultural Adaptation Scale-Revised (SCAS-R) and the Psychological Well-Being Scale utilizing a descriptive correlational design. Using Spearman’s correlation test with a significance level of 0.01, the study shows a significant positive correlation between sociocultural adaptation and mental well-being among foreign college students. Respondents also demonstrated high value for feedback and generally performed well in managing academic/work responsibilities. A notable strength lies in respondents’ perception of life as a continuous process of learning and growth, with a significant proportion strongly agreeing with this statement. Furthermore, a considerable number value challenging experiences, exhibit a willingness to share with others, and possess a great sense of direction and purpose in life. The results emphasized the importance of culturally competent interventions and support systems to address the individual needs of international students. This can benefit educational institutions, healthcare providers, and policymakers to enhance the academic success and overall well-being of foreign students, thereby fostering global student mobility and promoting intercultural understanding.
