Level of awareness and attitude towards E-cigarette engagement among student nurses in a private university in Iloilo City

Abstract

E-cigarette use among young adults, including future healthcare providers, raises significant concerns due to substantial health risks. Despite being marketed as a safer alternative, studies highlight nicotine addiction and exposure to harmful chemicals. This study comprehensively investigated awareness, attitudes, and utilization of e-cigarettes among third-year student nurses of a private university in Iloilo City, Philippines. This descriptive-correlational research employed stratified random sampling, carefully selecting 143 students from a private university. A 24-item survey was used to thoroughly assess demographics, e-cigarette utilization, awareness, and attitudes. Findings revealed moderate awareness of e-cigarette health risks, yet noticeable knowledge gaps existed. Attitudes toward e-cigarettes were decidedly mixed, with some perceiving benefits amidst acknowledged potential dangers. Notably, over a third of respondents admitted trying e-cigarettes, primarily disposable devices. A strong correlation conclusively linked favorable attitudes to e-cigarette use.
