Level of awareness and extent of implementation of program on dengue prevention and control

Abstract

In 2022, Iloilo Province experienced a dengue outbreak. Based on the number of cases per district, Molo has had the most with 66 cases, and Barangay Calumpang has the highest with 14 cases. This study examines the understanding and application of the Department of Health's (DOH) dengue prevention program among residents of Barangay Calumpang, Molo, Iloilo City. Data from 390 households were collected through surveys, employing a descriptive nonparametric correlational method. The analysis, including Spearman’s rho correlation, revealed a strong correlation (r = 0.524, p = 0.01) between awareness and implementation, contrary to the initial hypothesis. Higher awareness corresponds to greater implementation, emphasizing the necessity of community education.

Key findings highlight an above-average awareness (mean score: 2.7182) and an average implementation (mean score: 2.553) of the DOH program. Recommendations include prioritizing awareness-raising efforts, sustaining educational initiatives, supporting community-driven actions, and utilizing targeted communication strategies. Continuous monitoring and improvement of preventive measures are essential for effective dengue control. This study contributes valuable insights into enhancing community engagement and strengthening dengue prevention efforts, particularly in endemic regions like Barangay Calumpang, Molo, Iloilo City.
