Knowledge, perceived competency, and user-acceptability of electronic health records of staff nurses in selected private hospitals

Abstract

This descriptive-correlational study investigated the levels of knowledge, perceived competency, and user-acceptability of Electronic Health Records (EHR) among 89 staff nurses in selected private hospitals in Iloilo City, Philippines. The research aimed to describe the demographic profile of the respondents, determine their proficiency with EHR systems, and examine the relationships between their knowledge and perceived competency with their user-acceptability of EHRs. The study found that the majority of the staff nurses were female (69%) and young, with a mean age of 27. A significant portion of the respondents demonstrated a moderate level of knowledge (72%) and perceived competency (79%) regarding EHRs. The overall user-acceptability of EHRs was also moderate, with 72% of nurses falling into this category. A key finding of the study is the relationship between the variables. While there was no significant correlation found between the nurses' knowledge and their acceptance of EHRs (Spearman’s p = 0.075, p = 0.486), a strong and statistically significant positive relationship was identified between their perceived competency and user User- Acceptability (Spearman’s p = 0.522, p < .001).The study concludes that while nurses possess a foundational understanding of EHRs, there are notable gaps in more technical and advanced competencies. The strong link between perceived competency, “know-how,” and User- Acceptability further emphasizes the importance of practical, hands-on training. This training should focus on enhancing both the technical skills and the confidence of nurses in using EHR systems effectively. By addressing these gaps, healthcare organizations can foster a more seamless integration of technology into nursing practices, ultimately improving patient care outcomes.
