Knowledge, skills, and readiness for artificial intelligence integration in nursing practice among special area nurses

Abstract

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming healthcare, presenting both opportunities and challenges for nursing practice, particularly in specialized areas that employ modern technologies. This quantitative study explores the knowledge, technological skills, and readiness for AI integration in nursing practice among special area nurses. This research employed a descriptive correlational design and used a survey method with 127 specialized area nurses. The findings indicated that nurses had substantial knowledge regarding artificial intelligence, especially concerning its potential to enhance administrative tasks; however, their comprehension of algorithms was very limited. In terms of technological skills, nurses showed moderate proficiency in artificial intelligence. The study found that the nurses were generally ready to adopt artificial intelligence in nursing practice. The respondents expressed a willingness to adopt emerging technologies despite having limited education and formal training in the field. There is a strong and direct relationship between the level of knowledge and readiness to integrate artificial intelligence in nursing practice and between technological skills and readiness. The results suggest that enhancing nurses’ knowledge and skills increases their preparedness to embrace AI in nursing practice. Furthermore, this study implies that greater engagement and preparedness for integrating AI into nursing practice require adequate knowledge and proficient technological abilities to enhance nursing practice. This enhancement improves patient care and empowers nurses to leverage AI tools effectively, leading to more efficient workflows and better clinical outcomes. As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, investing in training programs that focus on AI literacy will be essential for the future of nursing.
