Abstract
Clinical decisions happen daily; however, there are nurses who are experiencing shortcomings in this. This study aimed to determine the clinical decision-making skills of 147 staff nurses working in public and private hospitals in Roxas City, as well as the influence of sociodemographic (age, sex, educational attainment, number of years of clinical experience, number of trainings attended), work-related factors (type of hospital, area of assignment) and decision-making concerns (apprehension, time pressure and professional autonomy) of staff nurses. This descriptive-correlational study utilized a one-shot survey design. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 25 for descriptive statistics. Chi-Square, Cramer’s V and Gamma were used. It was found that the level clinical decision-making skills of staff nurses was average. It also revealed that the respondents had a moderate level of apprehension, time pressure, and professional autonomy in making clinical decisions. Educational attainment had a significant relationship to the clinical decision-making skills of staff nurses. Area of the assignment was also significantly related to clinical decision-making skills. As for, decision-making concerns (apprehension and time pressure) they were also significantly related to the nurses' clinical decision-making skills. Hence, educational attainment, type of hospital, and area of assignment had a moderate influence on the clinical decision-making skills of staff nurses. Professional autonomy had no influence in the clinical decision-making skills of staff nurses. Nurses’ decision making can be supported through pursuit of advanced studies.
