iKid Protector: A parental control software
Abstract
This system was developed to aid parents in monitoring their child’s activities on the computer. Thus, the iKid Protector Parental Control System was developed. This system was specifically designed to aid parents, while they are at work, to monitor every activity of their child on the computer. It was also designed to be easy to use, a simple interface and minimal number of buttons to navigate through the system. The system allows the parents to set restrictions on the computer so as to keep an eye on their children. Features of the system includes: Site Restriction, which allows the parents to restrict access only to certain sites; Application Restriction, to restrict access to applications; Monitoring, to log every activity on the computer, such as websites visited, and application used; Time Control to set-up a specified length of time a child can use the computer.
Basically, the system has two components: a Server-side application (Parent) accessible only by the parents, wherein it allows them to set-up the restrictions, and a Client-side application (Child) that allows the child to view sites visited, application used, and restrictions to access the system but cannot modify the settings set-up by the parents.
The front-end of the system was designed using Microsoft Visual Basic 8, everything from the interface to the buttons, while it’s back-end was designed using Microsoft Access to store the logged information.
