Abstract
Student curriculum advising is an essential task in any educational institution. It is meant to help students develop educational plans that are in line with their academic career and life goals. Traditionally, a university student plans the courses to be enrolled semester by semester towards the completion of the degree through lengthy meetings with the academic adviser. This time-consuming student curriculum advising are oftentimes the reasons for delayed enrollment and graduation of the students.
The Decision Support System for Student Curriculum Advising is a web-based system that emulates the curriculum advising tasks of the faculty adviser and Student Record evaluators (SRE) in the University of the Philippines Visayas, Miagao, Iloilo during the pre-enlistment and confirmation of courses by the students. It utilizes the enrolment and grade data available in the university’s Computerized Registration to produce a system that can generate curriculum checklists and plot the student’s plan of study from the current semester leading to the completion of the degree hence saving time and effort and prevent human-induced errors in student academic record encoding. The system also automates the application for subject substitution to expedite the process and automatically marks the results in the student’s checklist.
