A critical survey of physical education in the secondary schools in Iloilo Province
Abstract
For many years physical education has been a required subject in both public and private secondary schools throughout the Philippines. This subject was included in the school curriculum because educators believed that physical education plays a very important role in the development of the individual. Although this has been the general concept, there are many school administrators, teachers, pupils, and parents who have not yet fully realized the values derived from the subject. There are still others who refuse to recognize its importance in the life of an individual. This indifferent attitude has helped to prevent the realization of the individual’s well-rounded development intended by the activity. The status of physical education in its aim to develop a completely integrated personality seems yet to be far from established. The present study of the problems involved in this subject is an attempt to discover the present condition of physical education in the secondary schools in the province of Iloilo. Suggestions and recommendations will be made to improve the program. To physical education instructors who are sincere in their aim to teach this phase of education, this study may be profitable in acquainting them with the existing problems and a possible solution to those problems.
Statement of the problem. This study is an attempt to evaluate the present condition of physical education in the secondary schools in the province of Iloilo. It will seek to answer the question whether the present program in physical education meets the standards of the Bureau of Education. It will make an inquiry into the local problems involved in the organization, methods and procedures that are presently practiced in carrying out the program of physical education in both public and private high schools. Finally, this study will make an investigation of the contribution of physical education to the well-rounded development of the individual.
Scope of the problem. The scope of the problem covers the investigation and evaluation of the qualifications of physical education teachers, equipment, playgrounds, buildings, finance, and program of activities in the high schools of Hollo Province. Although the study is limited to the province of Iloilo, it is presumed that whatever conditions are found in this locality may also be found in many places in the Philippines. The justification of this presumption is based on the fact that the curriculum and requirements in physical education for both academic and general high schools in both public and private institutions are the same throughout the country.
