Interest in teaching and competence of faculty in the College of Nursing of Central Philippine University, Jaro, Iloilo City second semester 2005-2006

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the interest in teaching and teaching competence of the faculty members in the College of Nursing of Central Philippine University, Jaro, Iloilo City as assessed by the nursing students and whether a variation exist in their teaching interest and competence when they were classified according to their characteristics.

This is a descriptive-relational study that used an accomplished teachers’ rating scale of the faculty in the second semester of 2005-2006 as a measure of competence. Data were computer-processed and analyzed using mainly descriptive statistical tools, particularly the mean and frequency distribution. The Z-test, ANOVA and gamma were used to determine whether there is a significant variations that exist between certain variables.

The findings of the study showed that most of the faculty in the College of Nursing were young adults, with most have earned units towards a Masters’ Degree units, and had a short teaching experience. The overall teaching competence of the faculty was good and they were moderately interested in teaching.

Almost one-half of the respondents who had high interest in teaching ages were in their late adulthood, while more than one- half of respondents were moderately interested in teaching among the young adult and middle adult. It was also found out that there were only a few faculty with the little interest in teaching.

The respondents’ interest in teaching did not significantly vary according to age. The majority of the female faculty in the college of nursing were moderately interested in teaching, while the majority of the male faculty were highly interested in the job.

There is a significant variation in the teaching interest of the faculty according to gender. Interest in teaching also varied according to highest degree attained.

Those with higher degree attained were more interested in teaching than those with bachelors’ degree only. Moreover, the faculty with longer clinical experience had a higher interest in teaching than those with a shorter clinical experience who were moderately interested in teaching.

When the mean rating was considered, statistically, there is no significant variation in the teaching interest of faculty and their clinical experience. Faculty in the college of nursing who had a longer teaching experience had higher interest in teaching, while those who had a shorter teaching experience were moderately interested in teaching.

It shows in the mean rating, statistically revealed no significant variation in the interest in teaching of the faculty and their teaching experience. Faculty assigned in lecture had a higher interest in teaching, and those in CHN had a moderately interested in teaching. The area of assignment has no significant bearing on the teaching interest of the faculty.

The majority of faculty had a good teaching personality, teaching ability and human relation as well as the overall competence across all ages. A few of older faculty had fair teaching competence. Teaching competence of faculty in three categories does not vary in terms of age. The characteristic of respondents has no bearing on their teaching competence. In this study no relationship exist between the characteristics of respondents and their interest and competence in teaching.

There is no significant relation between the interest in teaching of the respondent and their teaching competence. The faculty in nursing were good teachers, it is recommended that the college should provide more capability building and faculty development programs in order to improve their teaching competency. Faculty should attend seminars and other enrichment symposiums to improve their competence and be more innovative, skillful and resourceful in their teaching, and they should finished their masters degree.
