Knowledge and practices about solid waste management among households in a barangay in Jaro, Iloilo City

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the knowledge on solid waste management and solid waste management practices of households in a barangay in Jaro, Iloilo City. The one-shot survey research design was used in gathering data from 180 households using an interview schedule. All the data gathered were encoded and computer analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22. Analyses were descriptive using frequency and percentage distribution and inferential using t-test, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Chi-square test. Results revealed that the respondents were less than 30 years old, live along the railway, married, female, under graduates, service workers, earning a monthly income of PHP5,001 to PHP10,000, with a total household monthly income of PHP15,000 and below and PHP16000 to PHP30,000, and had 4 to 6 household members. They had a moderate level of knowledge about solid waste management and a moderate level of solid waste management practices. There are significant differences in knowledge about solid waste management according to their residence location, civil status, sex, education, occupation, monthly income and household monthly income. There are significant differences in solid waste management practices according to their sex, occupation and household monthly income. The level of knowledge of the respondents about solid waste management was significantly related to their solid waste management practices.
