Abstract
This study explored the lived experiences of student council members at the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) regarding their efforts to balance academic and student leadership responsibilities. Using a qualitative phenomenological methodology, semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis were conducted with five student leaders who have served in the CAS Student Council for at least one year. The study aimed to deepen the understanding of the challenges student leaders face and the strategies they employ to navigate academic and leadership demands. The analysis revealed four primary themes that highlight the complexities and fulfillment of student leadership. The first theme, “Struggles of Balancing both Student Leadership and Academics,” emphasized the difficulty of managing overlapping responsibilities. The second theme, “Effective Approaches to Balancing,” explored how participants used time management, prioritization, and strong support systems to stay organized and maintain well-being. The third theme, “Thrive with Purpose: Growth, Leadership, and Passion,” examined how leadership contributed to participants' maturity, accountability, and sense of purpose. The final theme, “Fulfillment through Experience and Connection,” highlighted the satisfaction of making an impact, personal growth, and the importance of meaningful relationships. These themes reveal both the challenges and the rewards of student leadership, underscoring its transformative role in personal and professional development.
