Abstract
This study entitled "Level of sleep quality and coping among Working students in Private Higher Education Institutions" aimed to determine the level and significant relationship between sleep quality and coping among working students enrolled in Private Higher Education Institutions. Sixty (60) participants were selected through snowball sampling using two (2) standardized test named; Sleep Quality Scale (Yi, Shin, & Shin, 2006, cited in PsychTest database Record, 2022, & Enticare, 2022) and the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Inventory (Brief COPE by Carver, 1989, cited NovoPsych, 2021.) In this study, the quantitative approach using a descriptive-correlation research design was utilized. Furthermore, the research design employed a survey questionnaire and used Spearman's Rho as a statistical tool. Findings of this study state that the majority of working students are female, with the poor-income class being the most prevalent socioeconomic status group. This emphasizes that gender and socioeconomic status play significant roles in the demographics of working students. Next, sleep quality among working students is moderately low overall, but varies by gender and socioeconomic status, with males and those in poor-income class reporting higher quality. Another finding is; coping level is moderately high overall, with minor variations by gender and socioeconomic status, and upper middle-income class showing the highest coping mean. Lastly, significant relationship found between sleep quality and coping among working students, rejecting the null hypothesis. The study concluded that, although the general trend among working students at Private Higher Education Institutions indicates moderately low sleep quality, certain subgroups, specifically males and individuals from poor-income backgrounds, experience moderately high sleep quality. Coping was found to be moderately high across all categories of sex and socioeconomic status, suggesting that these students manage stress and challenges reasonably well. Furthermore, a significant correlation between sleep quality and coping was identified. This indicates that better sleep quality may be associated with coping, or conversely, that effective coping could contribute to improved sleep quality. These findings underscore the importance of targeted interventions to improve sleep quality, particularly for females and students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds. Enhancing sleep quality in these groups could potentially lead to better overall coping abilities, contributing to improved well-being and academic performance.
