A program of clinical instruction based on needs of obstetric patients in Iloilo Mission Hospital

Abstract

A need of obstetric patients in Iloilo Mission Hospital is an adequate teaching program. Mothers were found to have little understanding about physiology of reproduction and indications of care.

This study was undertaken in order to determine whether the needs of mothers could be met through the services of student nurses as teachers and to find out the effectiveness of a program of instruction which includes the material in the Obstetric course of the College of Nursing of Central Philippine University.

The investigator interviewed 203 mothers to find out the areas of mis-information and to determine the necessary content of courses for a teaching program, using guide questions. The result of the interview indicated a need for an instruction program. The results further showed difficulty of mothers to obtain the needed instruction. Prom the results of the interview a teaching program for the mothers was designed. This was given to a test group of mothers who finished the three session course. Evaluation of this teaching program was done by interview with the test group of mothers and actual inspection of their babies.

Then ten senior students were selected and given pre-instruction test using questionnaire to determine how ready they were to teach mothers. These students were found to have some misunderstanding about certain aspects in obstetrics but had good retention of items which were frequently seen in ward situations. They had poor retention of items which asked for reasons or causes. However, after guidance was given them, there was improvement in their understanding of the subject. The students planned their teaching program. They gave their program of instruction to a test group of mothers who finished the three session course. Evaluation of this teaching program was done through a questionnaire given to the mothers. To find out the effectiveness of patient-teaching on the learning of students, a post-instruction test using questionnaire were given out to the students. The results showed that patient-teaching improved the students' understanding about obstetrics. The study showed that the instruction given to two groups of mothers by the investigator and students increased their knowledge concerning obstetrics. The material included in the research program seemed to be the information which mothers need in preparation for responsible motherhood.

From the results of these testings the investigator proposed to present an outline which would modify the present course in Obstetrics in order to prepare the students to meet the needs of mothers.
