Nurses perception of their competence on managing patients in a private tertiary hospital in Iloilo City

This study was conducted to determine the nurses’ perception of their competence in managing patients in a private tertiary hospital in Iloilo City. Specifically, it described the personal characteristics of staff nurses in terms of sex, educational attainment, length of experience, area of work assignment, and the number of career training attended, their perceived competence on patient management, and the relationships existed between variables. The 84 respondents were taken through complete enumeration from different units/departments of the hospital. The one-shot survey design was adopted and the descriptive-correlational method was applied. Data gathered were obtained from the adopted standardized clinical questionnaire and analyzed using the frequency count, percentage, mean, Cramer’s V, and Gamma tests. Results showed that nurses who were female, novice, and with much training were assigned mostly in the ICU/NICU/ER unit of the private tertiary hospital. Nurses were highly competent in all patient management areas. Bachelor’s degree holder but has longer experience and more trainings were found highly competent in patient management. The highest educational attainment of the respondents has a greater influence on patient management competence than other selected characteristics. Sex is not a factor that influences the advanced nursing competence of nurses X characteristics. Sex is not a factor that influences the advanced nursing competence of nurses in patient management. The respondents’ sex, length of experience, area of assignment and the number of trainings attended have negligible influences on the overall perception on patient management.
