The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical competency of nursing students in the operating room, delivery room and nursery among selected Higher Education Institutions in Region VI based on the eleven key areas of responsibility as mandated by the CMO No. 14, series of 2009. This study employed a mixed method comprising quantitative and qualitative approaches. A descriptive-evaluative design was conducted to determine the clinical competency of nursing students in the special areas among selected Higher Education Institutions in Region VI. The participants of the study were composed of nursing students, clinical instructors and head nurses. Modified evaluation tools were used to determine the clinical competency of students in the operating room, delivery room and nursery. To validate and confirm the quantitative data on the level of clinical competencies in the operating room, delivery room and nursery, an in depth one on one interview using an interview guide was utilized. The data were scored, classified and subjected to computer-processed statistics, analyzed, and interpreted. The statistical tools employed were descriptive statistics such as mean and weighted mean while t-Test at α = 0.05 level of significance was utilized for inferential analysis. Based on the findings of the study, the student’s assessment of their clinical skills was very good in the operating room, delivery room and nursery. They revealed that they can function with minimum guidance and are highly competitive in performing the mandated competencies. However, the clinical instructor’s assessment of the nursing students’ competency in the operating room, delivery room and nursery varies from that of the students. They reflected that students were not yet ready to perform the mandated competencies. Therefore, students’ assessment of clinical competency was significantly different from that of the clinical instructors in the operating room and delivery room as shown in the p-value of 0.001 and 0.015. However, in the nursery, there was no significant difference with p-value of 0.061. On the experiences encountered by the students as observed by their head nurses, the following actions will help in strengthening the competencies of the students: involvement of the students, updating current trends, inculcating values, organizing work, proper interaction and communication, appropriate guidance, step by step orientation and consistency. Based on the findings of the study, a proposed mentoring and supervision program was formulated.

Lived clinical experiences of nursing students assigned in intensive care unit

This study examined the lived clinical experiences of nursing students assigned in Intensive Care Unit of a private hospital in Iloilo City. Participants were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interview. The data were then transcribed and analyzed by means of a simplified version of Hycner’s (1985) process. The findings revealed three major themes, namely: feelings toward the environment, knowledge and skills enhancement and perception of the experience. The identified themes provide insights toward students’ perceptions of experience and approaches to learning over time through observation of and reflection on their on-going participation in the care of critically ill patient.

Phenomenological study on infant care among teenage mothers

This study, using the descriptive phenomenological approach, explored the infant care experience of teenage mothers. Seven teenage mothers, ages 15-19 years old, were interviewed. These participants came from diverse educational, socio- economic, and geopolitical backgrounds, who were primary caregivers of their children 0-12 months old at the time of the interview and delivered termed babies without any congenital disorders regardless of the method of delivery. The interview with teenage mothers was recorded using a digital recorder and was transcribed using Hycner’s (1985) method.
Findings of the study showed that essence of the infant care experience of teenage mothers is characterized by four major themes: adapting to infant care routines, facing challenges in infant care, adjusting to become a teenage mother, and feeling of fulfillment of motherhood experience. These teen mothers cared for their babies with support from their families, partners and significant others. Some of them regretted becoming mothers at an early age and deprived of social life, sleep, and time for self. They desired for self-improvement and tried to manage time. They may be young, but they feel happy and fulfilled seeing their babies grow.

This descriptive correlational study was conducted to determine the influence of academic achievement to board performance among nursing graduates at Central Philippine University during the school year 2004-2005. It also ascertained the significant relationship between academic achievement and board performance of nursing graduates. The respondents were the nursing graduates of CPU. They were classified as to gender and course. The data on the academic achievement of students were gathered from the office of the registrar and the results of board performance were taken at the professional regulations commission. The descriptive statistical tools used were the mean and standard deviation. Pearson's r was used as inferential statistics. Level of significance was set at .05 alpha. The findings of the study revealed that the academic achievement of the graduates as an entire group and when classified as to various categories such as sex and course was average. Likewise the board performance of the graduates as an entire group and when classified as to male and course was fair, and when classified as to female was good. Finally a positive and highly significant relationship existed in the academic achievement and board performance of graduates.
