The Philippine copper leaf (Acalypha wilkesiana) is a relatively untapped plant with notable ethnopharmacological properties. This study investigated the phytochemical composition, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of the leaf ethanolic extract of A. wilkesiana collected at Central Philippine University Gardens in Iloilo City, Philippines. Qualitative phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of bioactive compounds, including alkaloids, tannins, saponins, proteins, phenols, flavonoids, glycosides, carbohydrates, and terpenoids. Quantitatively, the total phenolics and flavonoid contents of the extract were 1,203.7±0.33 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g and 235.36±2.0 mg of quercetin equivalent (QE)/g, respectively. The antioxidant activity, assessed using the 1,1-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, demonstrated a concentration-dependent radical scavenging capacity. The ethanolic extract exhibited strong antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), Streptococcus agalactiae, Escherichia coli, Edwardsiella tarda, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Salmonella typhi, with significant inhibition observed at 100 mg/mL. Resolute results from this first study on the phytochemicals, antioxidants, and antimicrobial activity of the Philippine copperleaf clearly demonstrate that it contains potent bioactive compounds with notable antibacterial and antioxidant properties. This underscores its potential for developing new therapeutic agents.

The Philippine Society of Hypertension (PSH) took part again in the annual May Measurement Month 2021 (MMM21) blood pressure (BP) campaign to raise awareness of hypertension. The MMM standard protocol designed by the MMM coordinating centre was used during screening. These included the collection of basic data on demography, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Standardized sitting BP measurements were taken three times, using automated BP apparatus and were either entered via MMM21 app, MMM@Home, and Google Forms or recorded on paper and transferred to Excel spreadsheets by PSH encoders. Hypertension was defined either as systolic BP ≥ 140 mmHg or diastolic BP ≥ 90 mmHg or on antihypertensive medication. A total of 59 655 participated through opportunistic convenience sampling. After multiple imputation, a total of 26 813 (44.9%) participants were identified as having hypertension. Of these, 14 449 (53.9%) were aware and 12 978 (48.4%) were on antihypertensive medication. Of those who were treated, 5644 (43.5%) had controlled BP (<140/90 mmHg) and 7334 (56.5%) were uncontrolled. These latest local data showed that BP awareness is still low with BP control achieved in less than half of treated patients. Continued collaboration is needed to improve BP screening programmes in the country.

The academic and licensure examinations performance of Associate in Health Science Education curriculum students

The academic and licensure examinations performance of Associate in Health Science Education curriculum students
Villano, Erlinda Salvan
This descriptive study aimed to determine the academic and licensure examinations performance of AHSE curriculum - Medical Technology, Nursing, and Nutrition-Dietetics graduates of Central Philippine University class 2002 and 2003. The subjects were the 124 graduates of the AHSE curriculum composed of 46 Medical Technology, 69 Nursing, and 9 Nutrition-Dietetics. Academic performance of the students was expressed as GPA of the students during the first and last two years under the AHSE curriculum. Statistical tools employed were means, percentages, and standard deviations for descriptive analysis while ANOVA and Multiple Regression Stepwise Analysis were employed for inferential analysis with significance level set at .05. Findings of the study revealed that the students as an entire group showed good academic performance during the first two years under the AHSE curriculum. During the last two years, taken as an entire group, the students showed good academic performance, with the Medical Technology students manifesting "fair" academic performance. In terms of licensure examinations, of the 124 graduates, 86 or 69% passed with no significant difference when classified according to course. The academic performance of the students during the first two years appeared to be a significant predictor although contributing only 12% of the variance in the licensure examinations.

Academic achievement and internship performance of Central Philippine University Medical Technology graduates 1994-1998

Academic achievement and internship performance of Central Philippine University Medical Technology graduates 1994-1998
Porras, Ma. Corazon Perucho
The purpose of the present study was to determine the academic achievement and internship performance of the Central Philippine University medical technology graduates from 1993-1994 to 1997-1998. The study used the descriptive- correlational method of research. The dependent variables in the present study were academic achievement and internship performance; the independent variable, year of graduation.
The subjects were the 219 randomly selected C.P.U. medical technology graduates during the aforementioned school years. The cluster proportional sampling method was employed.
The data were obtained from the graduates' transcripts of records filed in the C.P.U. registrar's office. The descriptive statistics employed were the means and standard deviations; the inferential statistics were the One-Way Analysis of Variance and Pearson's r both set at .05 alpha. The findings showed that the medical technology graduates of C.P.U. from 1994 to 1998 reflected fair academic achievement in general and in each of the different medical technology subjects. The graduates from 1994 to 1998 manifested good internship performance in general and in each of the different internship areas. The only significant difference in academic achievement was noted between the 1996 and 1994 graduates. Significant differences were noted among the different batches of graduates in their general internship performance and in blood banking, clinical chemistry, hematology, clinical microscopy, and histopathology.
